The Alexander & Buono Competitions

ABC's Expansion Plans

One of the goals necessary for seeing to it that growth and expansion of the ABC is assured involves creating more performance vehicles, through the competitions themselves, that will help create greater visibility and awareness for the not only the First and Second Prize Winners, but also seeing to it that their careers are actively enhanced through continued study and performances in some of the more traditional and respected venues.

In this way, artists build not only their abilities from the standpoint of experience, but also sustain a public visibility that is crucial to the advancement of a career.

Goals of Expansion

  • Growing the competitions themselves through a greater scope of advertising:
    • Interviews in major music publications
    • Issuing of press releases on both ABC and the individual artists
    • Enhancing and intensifying e-mailing campaigns
    • More comprehensive programs for Winners Recitals
    • Increased web presence through more features (a Question and Answer page; “Ask the Expert” (accountants, agents, conductors, house managers, publicists); reports on Winners of the Competitions and their performances throughout the world; translation of the web sites into additional languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian)
    • Offering scholarships that cover different expenses (further study, master classes, seminars, travel, wardrobe, music, attending the Musica e Arte Festival held each year in Tolentino, Italy) as part of ABC.
  • Career guidance for the First Prize Winners
  • Construction of Winners’ press materials and information necessary for dissemination, including photographs, biographies, creation of websites that include sample recordings, in addition to reviews and repertoire lists, as a means of enhancing career guidance where necessary
  • CD recordings of the ABC winners, and their promotion through appropriate sale and distribution channels
  • Guidance on styling, deportment (how to interview, working with conductors, how to publicize events where an artist is featured, mailings, how to dress)
  • Seeking out performance opportunities, arranging fee structures, enhancing publicity materials, structuring and extending the range of repertoire, choosing teachers, entering other competitions
  • Limited edition promotional products (scarves, mugs, pencils and the like).

What is Needed to Achieve These Goals?

With programs ready to be put in place immediately, funding is needed to help perpetuate the competitions for both the short and long term.  As ABC currently exists, funds from application fees tend to be sufficient to carry out the work associated with some of the costs of sustaining the ABC as well as expanding its goals in order to make it more effective.

However, with increased funding, all of the current expansion plans could be put into place, thereby enhancing the number of artists whose careers could be further promoted, and more importantly, sustained.
